,"description":"The aim of the RRS Discovery cruise 130 (DY130) to the PAP-SO was to service moorings at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain Sustained Observatory (PAP-SO) and Whittard Canyon. This cruise, including both the operations at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain Sustained Observatory and within the Whittard Canyon, forms part of the UK Natural Environment Council\u2019s \u201CClimate Linked Atlantic Sector Science\u201D (CLASS) project (https:\/\/projects.noc.ac.uk\/class-project\/sustained-ocean-observations), managed by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).\r\nAt the PAP-SO open-ocean time-series site in the Northeast Atlantic (49.0 \u00B0N 16.5 \u00B0W, 4850 m water depth) studies are made on ocean-atmosphere interactions and pelagic-benthic coupling using a range of mooring systems and direct sampling approaches. Like Smart Bay in Galway, PAP-SO is an EMSO site.  \r\nA future NERC CLASS cruise will focus on the Whittard Canyon (expected 2021\/22, delayed from 2020 by Covid-19) and will have direct participation by an Irish science team (National University of Ireland Galway). Preparation for that work includes a mooring in the eastern branch of Whittard Canyon (Irish EEZ) deployed in 2019 (RRS Discovery Cruise 103, http:\/\/nora.nerc.ac.uk\/id\/eprint\/525366\/) and replaced on both DY116 and DY130.  \r\n\r\nThe specific objectives of DY130 were: \r\nWhittard Canyon (Irish EEZ): \r\n1. Recovery of Whittard Canyon mooring (sediment trap, ADCP and CTD sensors) \r\n2. CTD for testing release for new mooring \r\n3. Deployment of replacement sediment trap mooring at Whittard Canyon \r\nPAP-SO (International waters): \r\n4. Recovery of sediment trap mooring at PAP-SO \r\n5. Recovery of Met Office\/NOC mooring with surface buoy  \r\n6. Deployment of sediment trap and sensors at PAP-SO \r\n7. Deployment of new Met Office buoy with surface ocean biogeochemistry sensors at PAP-SO\r\n8. Deployment of 3 gliders at PAP-SO\r\n9. Photography of the seabed using an ROV (HyBIS)\r\n10. Megacore sampling of the seabed\r\n11. Short Agassiz trawls\r\n12. WP2 zooplankton nets \r\n13. Other associated CTDs at PAP-SO and in an eddy to the east of PAP-SO\r\n14.
